What is PMP Certification?

The Project Management Institute (PMI) offers a PMP certification exam which is in high demand by employers and individual project managers around the world. To obtain PMP® certification, an individual must satisfy educational and experience requirements, agree to and adhere to a Code of Professional Conduct and pass the PMP® Certification Examination.

The PMP recognizes demonstrated competence in leading and directing project teams. If you’re an experienced project manager looking to solidify your skills, stand out to employers and maximize your earning potential, the PMP credential is the right choice for you.

Category I

Category II

At the time of application, the candidate holds a baccalaureate (Graduation) or equivalent university degree and has a minimum of 4,500 hours of project management experience within the five (5) process groups.

Note: The number of hours on the Experience Verification Form(s) must total at least 4,500 hours and the project dates must indicate that the candidate has at least three (3) years of project management experience within the eight-year (8) period prior to the application. Candidates must indicate at least thirty-six (36) unique (non-overlapping) months of project management experience on the Experience Verification Form(s) to satisfy the three-year (3) requirement.

At the time of application, the candidate does not hold a baccalaureate (Graduation) or equivalent university degree but holds a high school diploma or equivalent secondary school credential, and has a minimum of 7,500 hours of project management experience within the five (5) process groups.

Note: The number of hours on the Experience Verification Form(s) must total at least 7,500 hours and the project dates must indicate that the candidate has at least five (5) years of project management experience within the eight-year (8) period prior to the application. Candidates must indicate at least sixty (60) unique (non-overlapping) months of project management experience on the Experience Verification Form(s) to satisfy the five-year (5) requirement.

Candidates may apply by completing and submitting via postal mail only a PMP paper application or a CAPM paper application. Candidates may also apply on-line at www.pmi.org for the PMP and CAPM credentials for faster processing.

.Online applications are typically processed within five business days. Individual applications submitted by mail take approximately 10 business days. Corporate applications submitted by mail take 20 business days.
Once the application and fee have been processed, PMI will electronically send the Examination Scheduling Instructions, confirming that the applicant is eligible to take the exam.

Test candidates have 1 year from the date their application is approved and processed to take the exam. Candidates may take the exam once within each eligibility period. The candidate’s eligibility expiration date is printed on the 1st page of the eligibility letter the candidate receives if their application is approved.  The candidate can attempt thrice overall.

Candidates who do not pass the exam may retake the exam two more times for a total of three times within one year of application approval. If candidates are not able to pass the PMP certification exam within their one-year eligibility period, they must wait one year from the date of the last attempt to reapply for the PMP credential. Applicants who chose to apply for a different PMI credential, such as the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM®), may do so at any time..

Contact hours are the actual amount of time a candidate spends receiving instruction in project management or any of the 5 domains of project management (Initializing, Planning, Executing, Controlling, Closing). For example, if a candidate takes a 1-day class that last 8 hours and provides instruction in project management, the candidate earns 8 contact hours..

The PMP exam is a computer based exam conducted in the Prometric centers. The exam has 200 multiple choice questions. Each question has exactly one correct answer. You will get four hours to answer these questions. Most people find four hours to be more than sufficient for the exam. Out of these 200 questions, 25 questions are pretest questions. These are randomly places throughout the exam and are used for research purposes. These questions are not evaluated while computing exam results. You will only be evaluated on the basis of 175 questions. To pass the PMP examination, you must answer a minimum of 106 of the 175 scored questions correctly. After you finish and submit the exam, in the Prometric center you will immediately receive the overall mark-sheet for the exam in the Prometric center..

PMI states that all eligible applications are subject for audit. Upon successful completion of the audit, candidates will be able to sit for the PMP examination. Submission of an application indicates agreement to comply with audit terms. Please be advised, that while the selection process for the audit is primarily random, PMI does reserve the right to manually select any candidate to be audited at any time, including after the credential has been bestowed. Candidates who are selected for audit will receive an e-mail notification from PMI with detailed information on how to comply with the terms of the audit..
